Members of CERN

This is a map of the member and associate member states of CERN. At the time of its foundation in 1954, it had 12 members. Today, 23 countries are full members and another 8 are associate members.

Business Model of CERN

In order to give an overview of what the essentials are of CERN as a business, we developed a business model canvas which gives a short description of aspects such as its most important partners and what its key resources are.

Business Incubator Centres

CERN has nine so called Business Incubator Centres (BICs) located in its memberstates. These BICs aim to support entrepreneurs and small businesses to bring CERN’s technology and expertise to the market.


This is the convention of CERN. It is the document for the establishment of the organization. It dates all the way back to July 1, 1953.
As you can see, the convention is written in 3 languages, English, French and German, the 3 biggest languages in the continent. This is a common concept in the European co-operation, as it makes sure that no country is favoured over the others.
