During the Winter School multiple issues related to academic freedom were addressed by a mixture of lectures, workshops and discussion sessions. The three main issues of concern were imprisoned scholars/scholars at risk, ethical questions in modern society and freedom of expression and publication.
During the Winterschool, we were given the opportunity to work on case studies and identify action points to effectively contribute to enhancing academic freedom. In addition, we had the opportunity to work with guest lecturers and representatives of organisations, which helped us to figure out in what way we could contribute to raise awareness for academic freedom. The complex threats to academic freedom can only be only solved if scholars, universities, professional associations and potentially international bodies work together.
Non-governmental organizations like Scholars at Risk, support and defend the principles of academic freedom and human rights of academics around the world and have long called for further action to be taken by institutions and their networks. As we collaborated with Scholars at Risk, we got the chance to advocate for an actual scholar at risk and set up a campaign for this scholar as part of our project.
